This session examines how schools can create environments that make multilingual learners feel emotionally and psychologically secure, enabling them to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. It focuses on understanding the impact of culture shock and stress responses on both pupils and staff, and provides practical strategies for adults to serve as calm, safe bases for young people adapting to new cultural and linguistic contexts.
Session Objectives
By the end of the talk, participants will: Understand what psychological safety means for multilingual learners. Recognise signs of culture shock and stress responses in pupils. Explore how staff’s own triggers can interfere with creating safety. Learn practical techniques for self-regulation and co-regulation to help pupils feel secure. Develop empathy-based strategies for building belonging and trust across language and cultural differences.
